Throughout the country, down-ballot from the presidential race between President Donald Trump and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden are numerous U.S. Senate races that will have a profound impact on the control of that body.
One of those is in Alabama between incumbent U.S. Sen. Doug Jones (D-Mountain Brook) and Republican U.S. senatorial nominee Tommy Tuberville.
During an address to the Madison County Men’s Republican Club earlier this week, Tuberville stressed the importance of the GOP picking up his seat and how even if Trump wins reelection, losing the U.S. Senate in November could threaten Trump’s second term.
“[I] am telling you, we are going to get their best shot,” he said. “Chuck Schumer wants to be the leader of the Senate. I was called to the principal’s office two weeks ago in Washington, D.C. Senator [Mitch] McConnell looked me right in the eye and said, ‘Coach, if you don’t win this seat, we’re going to lose the Senate. That’s how close this is going to be. You have to win.’”
Tuberville continued, “He said, ‘Just think about this: If you don’t win and we lose the Senate, it’s not going to make any difference. President Trump, if he wins, will be impeached in three months.’ So, that’s how important this seat is. It’s not about me. It’s about keeping the Senate. It’s about keeping our president. It’s about keeping our values, our moral values that we have in this country.”
