U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville told North Alabama civic and business leaders on Monday that Huntsville’s defense sector played a major role in U.S. actions in Iran, known as “Operation Epic Fury.”

Speaking at the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber’s Washington Update, Tuberville said North Alabama engineers and defense contractors helped support weapons systems and technical development tied to the operation, pointing to Huntsville’s long-established role in missile defense and military innovation.

“Operation Epic Fury is the most lethal, successful air campaign in world history,” Tuberville (R-Auburn) said. “A lot of it was because of Huntsville, Alabama.”

He said the region’s defense sector contributed not only through military hardware but also through engineering expertise tied to systems developed across Redstone Arsenal.

“We should all be immensely proud of our military, who have been flawlessly executing this mission,” Tuberville said. “But we also should be proud of our defense community in Huntsville, who were the brains behind a lot of this that is going on.”

Tuberville specifically referenced local work involving missile systems and drone-related technology, saying Huntsville engineers adapted foreign weapons designs into usable defense.

“Our engineers were able to take Iran’s missile design, by the way, we got one of their drones, we restructured it here in Huntsville, put it in process and production, and we use it against them,” he said.

Huntsville remains one of the country’s largest defense technology hubs, anchored by Redstone Arsenal and more than 300 defense and aerospace companies operating across North Alabama. Many of the world’s largest defense contractors, including Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Blue Origin, call Huntsville home.

Tuberville said the broader defense footprint continues to strengthen Huntsville’s position as federal agencies expand in the region, including the continued transition of U.S. Space Command to Redstone Arsenal and additional personnel growth tied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
