U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) says he’s had enough of the crime problems in Montgomery and said will most likely send the National Guard to help clean it up when he becomes Alabama’s next governor.
Earlier this week, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed’s PAC sent out a mass text message to voters, seeking to fundraise off Tuberville’s previous comments on the issue.
“Tuberville is leaving office,” the text read. “But despite having a rare chance to operate without fear of retribution from the DC political machine, has stayed in line with the people voting to cut our healthcare and unleash chaos in our communities. And his campaign rhetoric isn’t any better—he’s threatened to sic the national guard on Montgomery and has vocally opposed our actions to improve our city.”
Thursday on WVNN’s “The Dale Jackson Show,” Tuberville was asked if he still intends to send the National Guard to Alabama’s capital city.
“100% Dale, they’ve had two shootings the last two nights,” Tuberville said.
“They had somebody killed the night before and four people shot two nights ago. It’s a war zone, and what’s going on there? I mean, again, you got to get these Democrats out there in the streets instead of backing up these criminals fight back against them. I mean, it’s ridiculous.”
The senator said there are many other cities around the country that also need the National Guard.
“100% that the law and order needs to take place,” he said. “We can’t continue like this. But again, we fight it up here. You know, Chuck Schumer said it’s murder. All these, all these people up here are they look at life different, but only because they want to fight back against law and order because they want power. They don’t care nothing about law and order. You know, they want people to sacrifice their own lives. And that’s what happened here.”
The Montgomery Area Crime Suppression (MACS) Unit has helped reduce crime some in the city, but the area has still faced some serious issues, including a recent mass shooting in downtown Montgomery that killed two people and wounded 12 others.
