U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville said a proposed Muslim commission in Massachusetts tasked with advising state government would “never happen” in Alabama on his watch.

Tuberville (R-Auburn) made the comment Tuesday in response to a social media post highlighting legislation pending in the Massachusetts Legislature.

“This is a coordinated effort to destroy this country from within,” Tuberville wrote. “THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN IN ALABAMA ON MY WATCH.”

The Massachusetts legislation would establish an 11-member permanent commission “on the status of people who practice Islam.” Members would be appointed by the governor, attorney general and other state officials.

Among its responsibilities, the commission would “identify and recommend qualified American Muslims for appointive positions at all levels of government, including boards and commissions.” It could also advise executive and legislative officials on proposed policies affecting Muslim residents and make recommendations to state and local agencies.

The bill was recommended for passage by a legislative committee in January and is currently before the Massachusetts Senate Committee on Ways and Means. It has not been enacted into law.
