Tuberville at CPAC: ‘We’re the ones that forced this war’ between Russian and Ukraine

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) is emphasizing that he stands opposed to additional funding to help Ukraine and that he views the U.S. partially culpable for the war unfolding in the first place.

Tuberville spoke about the continuing war during an appearance at the 2024 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington D.C.

“We’re the one that forced this war,” Tuberville said, “because we kept pushing NATO on Ukraine and showing Russia: ‘Hey, we’re going to build military bases on your borders’ and Putin said, ‘No you’re not going to do that.'”

The Senator then said more money won’t help the situation because Ukraine is unable to win the war.

“Now I’ve got a bunch of my people that I’m in the Republican Party with that voted for the $60 billion,” he continued. “I haven’t voted for any money to go to Ukraine because I know they can’t win. You hate that they’ve had 300,000 or 400,000 people killed and so have the Russians also. You hate that we supported this. We’re pushing them out in front of the guns, or out in front of the bus I’d guess you’d speak. It’s an atrocity, but they can’t win”

Tuberville also called for diplomacy to end the war and said he believes President Donald Trump would be able to make a deal.

“We need to get diplomacy,” he argued, “but there’s nobody in this White House, the Secretary of State or Biden, that can actually go over and negotiate….We’ve got to get it over with. Donald Trump will stop it when he first gets in. He knows there’s no winning with Ukraine. We can work a deal with Putin.”

He also said Biden’s foreign policy is a disaster.

“And then we got the Middle East,” he said, “and then you got China over there on the other side that’s our number one adversary, this is a mess all created by Joe Biden and his blundering in foreign relations.”

When video of the comments were posted on social media, Tuberville doubled down and said “100%.”
