President-elect Donald Trump has won a second term in office. In a surprise to many voters across the country, the Republican captured several unexpected battleground states to coast to a comfortable win in the Electoral College and also became the first conservative in 20 years to win the national popular vote.
The state of Alabama’s massive support for Trump, however, was anything but a shocker. In 2016, Trump bested Hillary Clinton by 27.7 percentage points, and in 2020 beat Biden by 25.4 percentage points to win Alabama.
In this year’s election, Trump received his highest margin of victory yet in the Yellowhammer State dominating Vice President Kamala Harris by 30.6 percentage points to gain Alabama’s nine electoral votes.
“I want to thank you all very much. This is great,” Trump said early this morning. “These are our friends. We have thousands of friends in this incredible movement. This is a movement like nobody’s ever seen before. I believe, the greatest political movement of all time.”
Trump expressed his gratitude to voters across the U.S. who helped to secure the victory.
“I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected the 47th president,” he said. “And every citizen, I will fight for you, for your family, and your future. Every single day. I will be fighting for you.
“And with every breath in my body, I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe, and prosperous America that our children deserve and that you deserve.”
Democrats haven’t won Alabama in a presidential race since 1976, when Jimmy Carter was elected. Additionally, the state has not been a battleground since 1980.
