The Troy Trojans are officially in the market for a new athletics director following the departure of Brent Jones, who has accepted a senior leadership position at Georgia Tech.
“It is with mixed emotions that we witness the departure of Brent Jones as Athletics Director of Troy University,” Troy Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. said in a statement according to WTVY News. “I am grateful for the outstanding leadership he has provided our staff and student athletes. His experience has prepared him for the next step in his promising career journey.”
Jones will join the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets as the Associate Vice President and Executive Deputy Athletic Director.
“Brent has everything that we were looking for to fill such an important role in our athletics department,” Georgia Tech vice president and director of athletics Ryan Alpert said. “He is an established leader at the FBS level, a dynamic fundraiser and revenue generator, and a proven brand-builder. He will play a huge role in fulfilling our championship aspirations here on The Flats.”
Jones has been at Troy since 2017, but in the last six years, he served as both Senior Vice Chancellor and Director for Athletics.
During his time at the helm, the Trojans enjoyed immense athletic success with 10 Sun Belt Conference championships including two of the last three years claiming the conference in football.
Other sports including baseball as well as men’s and women’s basketball also enjoyed success as Jones was largely successful in the seven head coaches he hired during his tenure.
He revealed a statement of his own talking about how special Troy will always be to him and his family.
“First, I would like to thank Troy University Chancellor Jack Hawkins Jr. for the leadership, friendship and support that he has provided and offered me throughout my tenure,” Jones said. “roy University is a very special university and I am grateful for my years of being a Troy Trojan. I am extremely excited to join the Georgia Tech Athletic Association and to be able to continue the momentum on The Flats. The opportunity to work with Ryan, who is one of the most forward-thinking and dynamic leaders in intercollegiate athletics, at one of the premier institutions of higher education in the nation, is an incredible opportunity.”
