‘The Olympics has gone woke’: Alabama leaders disgusted by sacrilegious depiction in opening ceremony

Many of Alabama’s political leaders are condemning Paris Olympic organizers after the opening ceremony appeared to use drag queens and other performers to mock Christianity.

The opening ceremony’s artistic director said on Saturday that the moment where it seemed the performance mimicked the “Last Supper” was not meant to “be subversive or shock people or mock people.”

A Paris 2024 Olympic spokesperson apologized saying, “If people have taken any offense, we are, of course, really, really sorry.”

Alabama Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter said this is just another example of why it’s important to defend Christian values at home in Alabama.

“I’ve spent today reflecting on last night’s blatant mockery of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by the [Olympics],” Ledbetter said. “My biggest takeaways are that the world needs Jesus more than ever, and protecting our Alabama values has never been more important.”

Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth said he was so disgusted by the performance he “turned it off.”

“The Olympics are supposed to unite people of all nations, colors, and faiths, but the opening ceremony in Paris mocked Christ’s Last Supper with drag queens and the LGBTQ agenda,” Ainsworth said. “I turned it off and watched a hunting show on TV, instead. I still support Team USA’s quest for gold.”

Members of the Alabama Republican Congressional delegation were also not happy with the opening ceremony.

“The Olympics is entirely different from the triumphant 1984 Olympics I remember that was based on athleticism and patriotism,” U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) said. “The Olympics has gone woke and I’m sure the TV ratings will reflect that.”
