Texas residents express gratitude to Alabama Power for helping restore power after Hurricane Beryl

A team of 350 Alabama Power linemen and support personnel, as well as 300 contractors, have worked around the clock this week to help restore power for customers in the Houston, Texas, area ravaged by Hurricane Beryl.

And residents there have been just as diligent in expressing their appreciation – in person, on makeshift signs, in phone calls and by posting dozens of messages to Alabama Power’s Facebook page.

In just 24 hours, one Facebook post about Alabama Power crews assisting in Houston had more than 4,500 “likes,” was shared more than 500 times and had almost 1,000 comments.

Utilities from around the country, including Alabama Power, are part of a network of mutual assistance for restoration efforts after severe weather. Last August, Alabama Power offered mutual assistance to restore power for customers in Georgia following Hurricane Idalia. This week’s efforts in Texas are in support of CenterPoint Energy after Hurricane Beryl left almost 2.3 million of its customers without power.

Much of Texas remains under a heat advisory with daily highs through the weekend forecast to be in the upper 90s and a heat index above 100 degrees, giving even greater urgency to getting the lights back on.

The Alabama Power Storm Team arrived Tuesday and has been working tirelessly to restore power and remained in good spirits and motivated Friday to contribute their skills to the restoration effort, according to an update from the Storm Team.

“Our Storm Team continues to make progress,” the report said. “Power has been restored to over 1 million customers with a little over 1 million customers still without power. CenterPoint has a goal of having an additional 400,000 customers restored by the end of day Friday, July 12, and 350,000 more customers restored by the end of day Sunday, July 14.”

One of those customers, Donna Radin, who lives in the Deer Park area just outside Houston, said she had been without power since 5:30 a.m. Monday. In a phone call to Alabama Power headquarters, she said Alabama Power crews restored her service Thursday afternoon.

“Alabama Power has been working around the clock in awful, hot conditions under heat advisories,” she said. “Their crews are nice and kind and have excellent manners. They never missed a ‘yes, ma’am’ or ‘no, ma’am.’”

Radin said she recognizes that the crews are away from their families and working in less-than-desirable conditions, but she is “very, very grateful.”

“They represented Alabama Power so very well,” she said, “and I wanted to make sure someone knew about it.”
