Steve Marshall signs Taxpayer Protection Pledge: ‘One more promise I’m proud to make’

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is making a promise that he will not support any new taxes if he becomes the state’s next U.S. Senator.

Marshall, who is also running to fill the seat that will soon be left vacant by U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), signed Americans for Tax Reform’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge while visiting Washington D.C. Monday.

By signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, candidates and incumbents make a written commitment to oppose any and all tax increases.

“As the first and only candidate in this race to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, I’m putting my commitment to Alabama taxpayers where it counts — in writing. No games, no wiggle room,” Marshall said. “Alabama families work too hard to have even more of their money taken in Washington, and they deserve a Senator who will fight to protect every dollar of it.”

Being the only candidate in the race to sign the pledge so far, Marshall is vowing to “oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses; and oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates.”

“I’m a conservative’s conservative. I’ve spent my career as Attorney General beating back federal overreach, defending the Second Amendment, protecting the unborn and standing up for Alabama’s working families,” Marshall continued. “While other politicians may talk a good game, I’ve spent my career doing what I said I’ll do. Signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge is just one more promise I’m proud to make — and one more I intend to keep as the next Senator from Alabama.”

Marshall was joined by ATR’s Founder and President Grover Norquist.

“I strongly applaud Steve Marshall for taking a principled stand and signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. He has exhibited a true dedication to fiscal responsibility and pro-growth tax policy by making this commitment,” Norquist said. “This Pledge is a powerful symbol of his unwavering support for taxpayers and their right to keep more of their hard-earned money.”

Established in 1986, the Taxpayer Protection Pledge has proven to be one of the most durable and effective measures of a candidate or lawmaker’s commitment to conservative values and fiscal responsibility.

“With Marshall’s Pledge, we can trust that he will champion pro-growth policies, protect our economic freedom and resist any attempts to burden Americans with even higher taxes,” Norquist added.

Marshall is running in the Republican Primary against U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), former Navy Seal Jared Hudson, former Trump official Morgan Murphy and others.
