Attorney General Steve Marshall, a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2026, said he has some concerns about the recent push to abolish the filibuster.
U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) has been arguing in recent weeks for abolishing the filibuster in the Senate so that they can pass more of President Donald Trump’s agenda. Marshall is running to take Tuberville’s place in the upper chamber as the senator is now running for governor.
Marshall said he’s open to looking at changing the filibuster rules, but also argued that Republicans should be careful about just abolishing it completely.
The U.S. Senate candidate discussed the issue Monday on WVNN’s “The Yaffee Program.”
“I think obviously all things are on the table when you look at how the Senate can effectively operate,” Marshall said. “The filibuster has provided opportunities for conservatives to make sure that we didn’t allow, for example, the radical policies of the Biden administration to become the law of the land.”
Marshall pointed out that Republicans were able to reopen the government eventually without making any changes to the filibuster.
“And so what we did see is, without banning the filibuster, that we were able to get government open back up,” he explained. “When finally the Democrats were able to, they cracked. What they thought they were going to accomplish, they didn’t accomplish. And so I think the filibuster has a significant role, and I think abolishing that is something that we ought to take very seriously before we end up doing.”
One of Marshall’s opponents in the race, U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), has openly called for abolishing the filibuster completely.
Marshall believes that it might be a better approach to the problem then just completely getting rid of the rule.
“Look, we’ve been able to modify the filibuster so that we don’t face a significant hurdle in getting our Supreme Court justices to be nominated,” he said. “We’ve been able to find certain exceptions to that filibuster rule as well. And while I know there’s been discussion around abolishing as whole, I think evaluating it critically, issue by issue, is the way to approach it.”
Marshall is currently running against U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), Morgan Murphy, former U.S. Navy SEAL Jared Hudson, and Rodney Walker.
