Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall announced on Thursday he will run for the U.S. Senate in 2026 — setting up a high-stakes race to fill the seat that will be formerly held by U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn), who announced his campaign for Governor of Alabama earlier this week.
Marshall, a two-term attorney general and former prosecutor, made his candidacy official with the launch of his campaign website and first video spot this morning.
“I’m running,” Marshall says. “It’s the honor of a lifetime serving as your Attorney General. We’ve taken bold action and gotten things done for Alabama and our country — from standing strong against the overreach and woke policies of the Biden administration to standing with President Trump to defend our values.”
“Today, I’m announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate to continue that fight and get things done for Alabama. That means continuing to work alongside President Trump to finish the job of making America Great Again by securing our border, making our communities safer, protecting our children, getting the economy going and making sure that more of Alabamians hard earned money stays in their pockets.”
Marshall also thanks Sen. Tuberville for his “dedication and Service in the Senate” and says he intends to carry on his conservative legacy representing Alabama in Washington.
In his first 30-second campaign advertisement, Marshall positions himself as a fighter ready to continue bringing Alabama values to the national stage. President Donald Trump is featured throughout.
“A lot of people talk tough. Very few get tough things done,” it says. “Attorney General Steve Marshall is a warrior for our state, a fighter for our values. We have fought the fights that had to be fought for the people of Alabama.”
“Steve stands for freedom, safety and the rule of law.”
Marshall’s campaign platform revolves around mainstay hardline conservative priorities: cutting taxes, slashing regulations, making Trump-era tax cuts permanent to boost the economy, eliminating the U.S. Department of Education, rebuilding the military and reversing Biden-era “social experiments” in the armed forces, advancing free-market healthcare reforms to lower costs, enforcing pro-life policies, and standing unapologetically with law enforcement.

Marshall, age 60, has served as Alabama’s attorney general since 2017, when he was appointed by then-Gov. Robert Bentley following Luther Strange’s appointment to the U.S. Senate.
He has since been twice elected to full terms, winning statewide with decisive Republican majorities. Prior to his statewide role, he spent 16 years as district attorney for Marshall County, where he first began his reputation as a tough-on-crime prosecutor.
With Marshall’s formal announcement today, he is effectively the front-running candidate as the field just begins to take shape.
Other potential candidates in the primary include U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), Caroleene Dobson, the former GOP nominee for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District with deep ties to the state’s agricultural community, former Navy SEAL Jared Hudson, who announced his candidacy yesterday, among others who have yet to announce.
The Alabama Republican Party primary election will be held on May 19, 2026.
