Businessman Steve Livingston on Monday announced that he will be seeking the Republican nomination for Alabama Senate, District 8.
At a campaign kick-off at the Jackson County Courthouse, Livingston touted his small business background.
“What we need in Montgomery is a homegrown business-like approach” Livingston said. “I have been a successful small businessman and I will bring small business values to the legislature. I believe government should live within its means and I do not support new taxes on our hard working families.”
Steve Livingston is the owner and manager of Dicus Oil Company and has been in business for over 30 years. He has served as president of Jackson-Scottsboro Chamber of Commerce, Scottsboro Rotary and is a founding member of Leadership Jackson County.
“The main things I will strive to bring to District 8 include creating a business friendly environment to encourage new industry to relocate to Northeast Alabama, protect us from government infringement on private property rights, and give our schools the tools they need to succeed,” Livingston said. “Government that governs best governs least.”
Livingston is joined in the GOP primary by current State Senator Shad McGill, R-Scottsboro, State Rep. Todd Greeson, R-Ider, and businessman John Blackwell.
McGill has been a lightning rod since being elected in 2010. In June, McGill’s wife set of a national media firestorm after she took to Facebook to vent about women who she said were messaging Sen. McGill “inviting him to explore” and also “sending pictures of themselves.” It appears they may have simply been victims of Facebook spam.
Greeson has served in the Alabama House since 1998 and has been a close ally of the Alabama Education Association. The AEA has already donated tens of thousands of dollars to his Senate bid.
Blackwell recently rotated off of the Auburn Board of Trustees. He’s currently chairman of INKANA Properties, a real estate development company. His son, Slade Blackwell, currently serves in the Alabama Senate in District 15.
Distirct 8 includes Jackson County and portions of Madison and Dekalb Counties.
