The Alabama House of Representatives passed four pro-life bills on Tuesday in an effort to move the state from the middle-of-the-pack to near the top of the list when it comes to states with the most stringent pro-life laws.

“In Alabama, we will fight tooth and nail to preserve and protect the life of the unborn until the liberal, activist Supreme Court decision making abortion legal in the United States is overturned,” House Speaker Mike Hubbard said in a statement after the bills passed. “Republicans in the Alabama House believe that life begins at conception and that a heartbeat is evidence of a viable life that deserves to be defended. I’m proud to lead the House at a time when we have enacted more pro-life protections than at any other period in Alabama history.”
But not everyone in the Alabama State House believed that Republicans were as sincere about their pro-life beliefs as they might appear.
As a matter of fact, Rep. Alving Holmes, D-Montgomery, said that 99 percent of the Republicans in the room would abort their own grandchildren under one particular scenario. That is, if they were going to be mixed-race.
“Ninety-nine percent of the all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion,” Holmes said from the mic on the floor of the House. “On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites who are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion.”
Kyle Whitmire of the Birmingham News was recording Holmes as he spoke and captured the audio, which can be heard below.
Holmes is only days removed from his last fit of racism on the floor of the House.
A couple of weeks ago he called Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an “Uncle Tom” and made derogatory statements about Thomas being married to a white woman. That compelled Fox News to send a correspondent down to Alabama to ask Holmes if he stood by his comments.
“Yes I do,” Holmes replied without hesitation. “I think Justice Thomas on the United States Supreme Court is an Uncle Tom. A black man allowed himself to be used to carry the message of a white man, which is against the interests of black people in America. In my opinion that’s an Unlce Tom. In my opinion, Clarence Thomas is a very prolific Uncle Tom.”

The Fox News correspondent, David Webb, then asked Holmes about his derogatory statements about Thomas being married to a white woman.
“[I said that] because there were members on the floor that were saying that,” Holmes said, deflecting the blame. “Many of them.”
Webb pressed Holmes to identify who the other members were, but he would only say that it was both Democrats and Republicans.
“I don’t recall exactly who did it,” Holmes said. “There’s 105 members of the House of Representatives and right off hand I don’t remember exactly who stated it. But I wouldn’t dare to say something like that.”
Webb, a black conservative activist and commentator, called Holmes’ statements “hypocritical” and “disingenuous,” among other things. The full interview is worth a watch and can be found below.
