State Sen. Orr warns of slippery slope on vaccine passports — ‘We need to be very careful as a society’

Last week, the Alabama Senate unanimously passed a bill that banned so-called vaccine passports from being required in Alabama.

The legislation was sponsored by State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur), and it protects Alabamians from being mandated to hold a COVID-19 vaccine “passport” to receive services and goods from a government or private entity.

During an interview that aired on Monday’s broadcast of Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5’s “The Jeff Poor Show,” Orr said he felt the ban was necessary because of what it could lead to in the future.

“[I] guess you can expand this, Jeff, and go to what’s to stop the government if they start a database, the first time ever for people’s health information controlled by the government,” he explained. “Now, obviously, your health records and mine are probably on the database at our doctor’s office and probably the hospital if we’ve had to visit. But they’re not privy to the government. Well, this would be, you know, if you roll it out, where the government is controlling the information. And then, what’s to stop, if we go down this road for the government, and I again, I’m hypothesizing — and I certainly admit that — but what if the Poor family does not pay their taxes. And the state says, ‘Well, we’re not going to allow them to receive any state services because they haven’t paid their taxes, so says our database. We’re going to start using that as a tool to enforce compliance or to tell people to do what we want them to do.'”

“And all of that — again, you can call it conspiracy theory, fear-mongering — call it what you will,” Orr continued. “But we need to be very careful as a society before we start just resigning ourselves and going along with these type concepts because where they lead in a few years may not be a place where we want to wind up.”
