State Sen. Arthur Orr is once again calling attention to what he views as a fundamental flaw in the nation’s food assistance program and says he plans to take action when lawmakers return to Montgomery.
Orr posted a picture of high-end Godiva truffle chocolate available for purchase on Amazon as “SNAP EBT eligible.”
“This is an example of how broken SNAP (food stamp program) is. While they might not arrive by Christmas Day, your EBT/SNAP card will score you gifts of fancy chocolate truffles— courtesy of the taxpayers. No one begrudges helping those facing hard times and needing help, but there has to be a limit on items like this,” Orr (R-Decatur) wrote.
“The Feds control the program but fortunately we now have the Trump Administration that is willing to work with states to curtail such nonsense. And, we might reduce obesity and diabetes in the process and save huge Medicaid dollars as well. With a federal deficit of almost $40 trillion, this is a no brainer! I’ll (again) file a bill in a few weeks when we gavel in a new legislative session to stop this in Alabama.”
Orr has long argued that while the program plays a critical role in helping families through hard times, there must be reasonable limits on what benefits can be purchased.

He has repeatedly emphasized that SNAP was designed to combat hunger and improve nutrition — not subsidize luxury or unhealthy products.
