State Auditor hopeful Andrew Sorrell loans campaign additional $100K, sets runoff fundraising goal

During Tuesday’s election, State Rep. Andrew Sorrell (R-Muscle Shoals) emerged as the top candidate of preference in the three-way GOP primary contest to replace term-limited State Auditor Jim Zeigler.

The freshman lawmaker received 39.46% of all votes cast, followed by pastor Stan Cooke at 32.79% and former State Sen. Rusty Glover (R-Semmes) at 27.74%.

Sorrell’s candidacy was bolstered in the primary by a six-figure media buy, which was made possible by his ability to fundraise and willingness to self-fund.

Alongside lending his campaign $250,000, Sorrell raked in $208,033 for the primary, which is the most funds raised by a candidate for State Auditor in Alabama history. His fundraising haul breaks the previous record held by former State Auditor Beth Chapman of $133,000.

Thursday, Sorrell announced his intentions to invest a supplemental $100,000 of his own funds for the runoff election.

In a statement announcing his fundraising goal for next month’s runoff, Sorrell expressed confidence in keeping with his campaign’s message of “government accountability and fiscal responsibility.”

“We are thrilled with the results of the Primary and our strong 1st place finish. Today I made the decision to invest in my campaign with an additional $100,000 loan,” advised Sorrell. “My runoff fundraising goal is $75,000 and I have already collected $15,000 in pledges this morning. We look forward to continuing to spread our message of government accountability and fiscal responsibility–a message we feel resonated with the voters on Tuesday at the polls.”

Sorrell and Cooke will face off in the runoff election June 21, 2022.
