Alabama State Auditor Andrew Sorrell is supporting U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville’s plan to cut income taxes in the state.
Tuberville (R-Auburn) released a 21-page governing agenda Thursday titled “Back to Basics: The Golden Age Playbook,” laying out seven priorities, eight bills for his first legislative session and a public scoreboard he says voters should use to grade him, less than two weeks before the November 3 general election for Governor of Alabama.
Part of his plan is to eliminate the remaining 2% state sales tax on groceries, bring the state income tax down in steps over the first term, freeze property tax increases on homes owned by senior citizens, extend the base rate freeze on power bills and phase out child care assistance gradually as a parent’s pay rises rather than cutting it off at an income cliff.
Sorrell not only likes Tuberville’s blueprint, but believes other lawmakers will jump on board, even if they didn’t support the idea in the past.
“It’s going to be SO fun watching all the legislators who insisted that it was impossible to cut the state income tax (back when John Wahl campaigned on it this summer) suddenly think it’s a great idea, be all for it,” Sorrell said on Facebook, “and brag about doing it once Tuberville forces their hand and proposes the bill.”
Sorrell was referring to Lt. Governor candidate John Wahl’s campaign pitch to start phasing out the state income tax. Wahl received backlash from some in the Legislature who said he wouldn’t have the power to cut the tax if he’s elected to the position.
24 Republican members of the Alabama Legislature signed an open letter to voters at the time declaring that John Wahl’s campaign ads promise tax relief the Lt. Governor’s office has no power to deliver.
Wahl argued the office gives him a platform to push that agenda, saying:: “As Lieutenant Governor, I’ll take that fight to the next level and make sure it gets across the finish line.”
