Stallions stampeding toward back-to-back USFL championships

The Birmingham Stallions had a point to prove Sunday.

And they did: Trampling over the New Orleans Breakers in a 47-22 victory to bag the South Division title and secure a spot in the USFL Championship Game for the second consecutive year.

On Saturday, they’ll face the Pittsburgh Maulers and a chance to repeat as USFL champions.

Stallions’ quarterback Alex McGough led the stampede, completing 21 of 31 passes for 310 yards, lobbing four touchdowns, notching 84 yards on the ground, and breaking through for an extra touchdown. It was a masterclass from McGough.

The Stallions boasted a robust ground attack that saw them amass 245 yards on 30 carries. Pacing the assault was Ricky Person Jr. with 84 yards on 10 rushing attempts. C.J. Marable added 72 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries.

Sunday night’s game was a showcase of the USFL’s best. The Stallions started strong, scoring on their first seven possessions and racking up a commanding 40-7 lead.

Birmingham head coach Skip Holtz and quarterback Alex McGough spoke after the game:

The Maulers are going into the game on the back of a 31-27 overtime victory over the Michigan Panthers.

The championship game will be played in Canton, Ohio. Kickoff Saturday is 7 p.m. and it will be broadcast on NBC.
