Blake Sims came to Alabama as a quarterback, changed to running back, and then returned to taking snaps.
The quarterback led Alabama to an SEC Championship and a berth in the inaugural college football playoff. He passed for 3,487 yards this season — completing 64.5 percent of his passes — for 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He trailed only Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota in total quarterback rating this season.
Sims is one of four Alabama players at this year’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., which is a showcase for college football seniors as they enter the NFL Draft process. For Sims, who measured at 5-foot-11, 223 pounds at the weigh-in, the question becomes whether he can play the position at the next level.
Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall has already decided to switch positions to cornerback to find a spot in the NFL. Marshall signed with Georgia as a cornerback out of high school, but switched to quarterback in community college and stayed at the position when he transferred to Auburn.
But Sims has already firmly stated his desire to play the quarterback position and nothing else, saying he’s a “quarterback all the way.”
Sims, Marshall and Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson are listed as the quarterbacks for the South team at Saturday’s Senior Bowl, and it could be a final showcase for Sims to prove that he deserves a chance in the NFL as a quarterback.
