Spirit Airlines will discontinue service at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, effective October 3, according to the Birmingham Airport Authority.

The low-fare carrier will end flights to Fort Lauderdale, Newark, and Detroit, as part of a broader exit from Birmingham and ten other U.S. airports following its second bankruptcy filing in August.

Spirit Airlines first entered the Birmingham market in October 2024 with nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale before later adding routes to Newark and Detroit.

In a statement, Spirit described the decision as a “difficult” one, adding that it is part of efforts to “transform our business and position Spirit for long-term success.”

Customers holding reservations beyond the October 3 end-of-service date will be contacted by the airline and provided information on refunds. Passengers may also find details through the airline’s website.

Airport officials noted that Delta Airlines continues to serve both New York City with three daily nonstop flights to LaGuardia and Detroit with three daily nonstops from Birmingham.
