Alabama’s top two lawmakers welcomed Monday’s U.S. Supreme Court order vacating the federal injunctions on the state’s congressional map.

Both pointed to last week’s special session as a move that has put Alabama in an immediate position to act the moment the high court ruled.

Alabama Speaker of the House of Representatives Nathaniel Ledbetter (R-Rainsville) called the ruling a generational win.

“This is a massive victory not just for Alabama, but for conservatives across the country,” Ledbetter said in a statement to Yellowhammer News.

“Our elections should be decided by Alabamians at the ballot box — not by judges in courtrooms. I appreciate SCOTUS taking action on this issue and look forward to Alabama electing its congressional representation using a map drawn by those closest to the people.”

Senate President Pro Tem Garlan Gudger (R-Cullman) was equally direct he said it marks a blow to “activist federal judges.”

“With its order, the U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the path for Alabama to hold free, open, and fair elections using the constitutional maps drawn by the Legislature rather than the unconstitutional maps forced upon the state by activist federal judges,” Gudger wrote in a statement to Yellowhammer News.

“The Supreme Court’s action removes the thumb from the scale in legislative and congressional elections and allows Republicans to once again have a fair chance to compete.”

Monday’s victory is now an actionable opportunity for the state, thanks to the special session that wrapped up just days ago.

“As a result of the successful special session that was completed last week, our upcoming elections will more accurately reflect the principles, beliefs, and values that average Alabamians hold close,” Gudger said, “and our state will be in full compliance with the Louisiana v. Callais ruling.”
