Southern Living magazine published a ranking of the Southeast’s best beach towns this week, and a pair of Alabama cities were jointly listed at number one.
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are described as “old-school beaches all about family fun.”
The two Baldwin county towns placed just ahead of Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Tybee Island, Georgia.
The towns’ entry on the list highlights Doc’s Seafood Shack and the sandy bar Flora-Bama as two essential places to visit when in the area.
In a longer article going into more detail about what the two places have to offer, Southern Living details the acclaimed food scene and the many opportunities to interact with nature.
The magazine specifically praises the Lodge at Gulf State Park, saying the establishment “is noteworthy for its level of style and comfort and also for its commitment to both conservation and sustainability.”
The publication recommends visitors check out the opportunities for paddling at the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge and the hiking trails at Gulf State Park.
Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) praised the listing in a tweet Wednesday, saying he was glad Alabama’s Gulf Coast is “receiving the recognition it deserves.”
According to @Southern_Living’s “the South’s Best Beach Towns 2020” list, Gulf Shores/Orange Beach is #1! Proud to see #Alabama’s Gulf Coast receiving the recognition it deserves. https://t.co/tQg5AfMUki
