Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman warns his fellow Democrats against making 2020 all about President Donald Trump.
Siegelman, the author of his forthcoming political memoir “Stealing Our Democracy” and self-described as from the left side and liberal, argued the path to victory was convincing voters to put aside party labels.
He told Huntsville radio’s WVNN that “working families” were not spending that much time being concerned about Trump.
“[T]his 2020 election — my message to Democrats, particularly, is this election should not be about Donald Trump,” he said. “This should be about working families. Working families don’t lay their heads down on the pillow at night worrying about Donald Trump. They’re worrying about their children, parents and grandparents. They want their kids to have a better life than they had. They know it starts with education. They want their parents to have a place to live, food to eat and drugs that they need. And you know, those are the kinds of things that working families think about.”
“I think the Democrats are kind of off-base in their campaign because all they have been talking about is Donald Trump,” Siegelman continued. “If you want to win elections, and this is a message to everybody, you talk about issues, and you talk about things that are important to the people. And generally, generally — they did in my case — people put aside party labels and vote for the person that they trust will work for their benefit. So, that’s my free political consulting advice to anybody who is listening.”
