Sen. Tommy Tuberville op-ed: My plan for fighting crime across Alabama

Tommy Tuberville
Sen. Tommy Tuberville meets with Alabama National Guard in Washington D.C.

Unfortunately, crime is out-of-control in several of Alabama’s major cities, including Montgomery and Birmingham.

For some reason, the woke leaders of these cities think murderers, rapists, and felons should be given free passes and allowed to roam the streets without any consequence. As a result, families are fleeing in droves because it’s no longer safe to go to the grocery store or for their kids to walk to school.

And because people are leaving, jobs are leaving.

Montgomery is a perfect example of what happens when local leaders willingly refuse to enforce the law and allow criminals to take over. The capital of Alabama has become a crime-infested ghost town, and there’s no excuse for that to be the case.

For too long, its Democrat leaders have been gaslighting you into believing that being soft on crime is a noble deed.

One of the major beliefs of Democrat-Socialists is that if you do the crime, you shouldn’t have to do the time. Somehow, it’s the system’s fault, not yours, that you committed a crime.
So instead, innocent Alabamians end up paying the price for these criminals being allowed back on the streets.

Alabama Democrats may never go on the record saying they want to “defund the police” because it would be political suicide.

But over the last six years, Democrats have introduced 56 bills to weaken law enforcement, reduce criminal penalties, implement early release for prisoners, and remove the death penalty.

Meanwhile, Alabama Republicans successfully expanded funding for police, strengthened criminal laws, and instituted the death penalty for serial child rapists. Forget the team jerseys. Look at their policies. Look at their record. Actions will ALWAYS speak louder than words.

When I’m Governor, my number one priority will be cleaning up the streets of Alabama’s major cities, like Montgomery. No one should be afraid to walk outside their own house. You shouldn’t have to hear gunshots resounding as you’re putting your head on the pillow at night.

I will continue to empower law enforcement personnel to bolster the ranks of the depleted police force. For years, our law enforcement has had their hands tied and have been unable to do their jobs for fear of repercussions from the woke mob. I have always had their backs and will work to ensure they can do their jobs without fear of retribution.

And if we need to call President Trump for backup, we’ll do just that. President Trump sent the National Guard into Memphis, and the results have been unbelievable. Since the Guard showed up, homicides are down 37%, robberies are down 47%, and sexual assaults are down 30%. The cavalry is coming.

But backing the blue is only half the battle. We also need to hold our judges accountable and make sure they are sentencing criminals to the fullest extent of the law.

For too long, woke activist judges have allowed murderers, criminals, and rapists to get off scot-free. Their courtrooms have turned into a revolving door.

Criminals walk in the front door and slide right out the back door. It’s hard to believe that in a state like Alabama we could have activists in our justice system, but we do.

Now they’re being put on notice.

I’m going to make sure cities and counties are accurately reporting crimes so we can focus on the areas that need help. The safety and wellbeing of the people of Alabama is a basic responsibility for state government, and I take it very seriously. If corrupt judges, mayors, or police chiefs get in the way of that, there will be hell to pay.

Doug Jones’ silence on these issues is deafening.

He doesn’t want to speak out about this because he knows it will upset his liberal California donors. But make no mistake, if Doug Jones somehow were elected governor, law enforcement would be gutted and woke judges would be emptying out our prisons.

The day of reckoning is coming for these people. I’m going to be tough on crime and tough on those who refuse to enforce the laws of this country and our state. I’ll make sure every tool and resource is available to our law enforcement to help keep Alabamians safe.

I have always been a champion of law and order, and unlike Doug Jones, I actually have a plan to get criminals off the streets.
