Selma mourns loss of 16-year-old football player after fatal injury

The community of Selma is grieving the loss of Morgan Academy student-athlete Caden Tellier, a 16-year-old high school football player, who passed away on Saturday after suffering a brain injury during a game.

Tellier, the quarterback for Morgan Academy, sustained the injury during the third quarter of Friday night’s home game against Southern Academy. He was immediately airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for treatment. Despite efforts to save him, his family announced his passing early Saturday morning on social media.

“Our boy, Caden Tellier has met Jesus face to face. We appreciate all of your prayers, and we covet them for the hard days ahead,” the family wrote. “Everyone who knows Caden has known kindness, generosity and love, and true to his nature, he is giving of himself one more time. Lives have been touched by the way he lived and now lives will be saved through his passing. We will walk out these next few days alongside him in his earthly body knowing that his spirit is rejoicing in heaven.”

Morgan Academy, a close-knit private school in Selma, is reeling from the loss. According to the school, grief counselors have been made available to students, and a vigil is planned for later this week to honor Tellier’s memory.
