SEC insider says Freeze is on ‘hottest seat in college football’

The Auburn Tigers have not found a ton of success through the first two years of the Hugh Freeze era with a total record of just 11-14, only five total victories in the SEC, and just one bowl appearance which came in a blowout loss.

Freeze has avoided the ire and wrath of the Auburn family due to the fact he has recruited at a level the program has not seen in a very long time and maybe ever, but at a certain point recruiting victories only get you so far and on-field results have to be achieved.

Likely entering that situation this year, Freeze has the best roster he has had at Auburn, but he also has the most pressure to do something with it.

During an appearance on the Next Round, Connor O’Gara of Saturday Down South spoke about the status of Freeze and made a bold statement as to the kind of job security he enters his third season with:

“I think Hugh Freeze has the hottest seat of anybody in college football,” O’Gara said when asked to compare the statuses of Freeze and LSU head coach Brian Kelly.

O’Gara compared the situation of Freeze to that of Florida head coach Billy Napier, who avoided termination largely because the Gators have a star quarterback that Napier was critical in recruiting in keeping in DJ Lagway.

“Hugh Freeze doesn’t have that…[he] has a lot of pieces that suggest improvement could be in store most notably with what I think is the best group of wide receivers Auburn has ever had, but I do think the pressure is on after a totally disappointing season in which I think you can point to a lot of his mistakes in the fourth quarter as to why this team ultimately did not get to that 7-8 win mark…he enters next season on a hot seat and it’s such a prove it year for him.”

Whether or not Freeze is able to right the ship and bring back winning to Auburn remains to be seen, but O’Gara is spot on in saying he needs to get it done.

If the Tigers have another season full of embarrassing late game losses and ultimately majorly underachieving, it’s not out of the realm of possibility to think it could be Freeze’s last season on The Plains.
