Saints, Pelicans owner pays off layaways at Birmingham Walmart

New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson recently paid off all layaways at a Birmingham Walmart location in celebration of the Christmas season.

The story was first reported by NOLA.com.

The Pelicans’ G-League affiliate is locating to the Magic City in 2022 when Legacy Arena will be ready for use, and Benson already is making Birmingham a part of the Saints and Pelicans family.

The Birmingham Walmart in question is located at Parkway E near Red Lane Road. An estimated 30-40 families are said to have benefited from the layaways being paid off.

Cedric Towns, the manager of this location, told NOLA.com that he was informed of Benson’s gift on Tuesday of this week.

“We needed some positivity to end 2020,” Towns commented. “We are definitely grateful for Ms. Benson for her contribution to our store and our community.”

“We’re just so thankful that Mrs. Benson did such a wonderful, wonderful act of kindness. So many people in our area have been affected by the pandemic, and this goes a long way in helping them out,” Towns added to WBRC. “Having someone like Mrs. Benson is very important to us at Walmart, and she is directly impacting the community in ways we could never imagine. We could not be more thankful for this extreme act of kindness.”
