Saban shares recruiting philosophy: ‘Honest, upfront, create value in your brand’

Not many have figured out how to recruit elite players to come play for them better than Nick Saban. In fact, Saban may very well be the best of all time at it — it’s partially why the Alabama dynasty lives on.

Wednesday, on the heels of the first early signing period, Saban was asked about his recruiting pitch, how he keeps it fresh in this new age of recruiting, and what he ultimately tells these high school players:

While the question was about social media and how Saban keeps up in this new age, Saban humorously said the reporter was “asking the wrong person,” but cascaded into a profound answer about his recruiting pitch overall.

“We try to be honest, we try to be upfront, we try to sell people on the fact that they can create value in their brand, that we’re gonna make a great investment in them here personally, athletically, and academically, and there’s a lot of guys that still buy into that,” Saban said.

“I think Name, Image, and Likeness has maybe spread where guys go out because some guys are interested in how much money they can make. And that’s OK. We’re trying to invest in the player and their future so they can create more value for their future and there’s a lot of players who still buy into that.”
