Roy Wood, Jr. leading grassroots effort to help clean up Birmingham after night of looting

A Birmingham comedian and actor is leading an effort to help clean up his city the morning after looters damaged more than two dozen businesses.

Roy Wood, Jr. first posted about his plan to try and help clean up black businesses in the city at 2:27 on Monday morning.

By 10:00 a.m., more than 50 people had come together, armed with brooms and trash bags, to help undo the mess caused by the civil unrest on Sunday night.

According to a tweet he posted, Wood was driven to action when he watched a clip of Dr. Juanakee Adams, whose eye care practice was damaged by vandals on Sunday night.

“Birmingham lets be a blessing. Join me Monday in cleaning up black businesses,” posted Wood.

He later followed up with a video once the crowd had eclipsed 50 people that showed cooperation among the public to clean up the broken glass and other debris that resulted from destructive actions taken late Sunday.

Wood has long been an advocate for his city, which he frequently mentions in his standup comedy routines. Part of his Twitter bio reads “repping the 205.”
