Robert Aderholt cosponsors Birthright Citizenship Act: ‘A necessary measure to preserve the integrity of American citizenship’

U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) is siding with President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Katie Britt (R-Montgomery) in his push to end birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants in the United States.

Aderholt (R-Haleyville) announced on Monday he was co-sponsoring the Birthright Citizenship Act, which seeks to clarify immigration law to “those classes of individuals born in the United States who are nationals and citizens of the United States at birth.”

The bill is an attempt by Republicans in Congress to back up Trump’s executive order on the issue, which has already been blocked by a federal judge.

“I am committed to ensuring that our nation’s laws uphold the principles upon which they were founded,” Aderholt said. “The Birthright Citizenship Act is a necessary measure to preserve the integrity of American citizenship and to prevent the exploitation of our immigration system.”

According to the bill, originally introduced by U.S. Rep. Brian Babin (R-Texas), it acknowledges “the right of birthright citizenship established by section 1 of the 14th amendment to the Constitution, a person born in the United States shall be considered ‘subject to the jurisdiction’ of the United States for purposes of subsection (a)(1) if the person is born in the United States of parents, one of whom is:

“(1) a citizen or national of the United States;

(2) an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States whose residence is in the United States; or

(3) an alien performing active service in the armed forces (as defined in section 101 of title 10, United States Code).”

Britt has already introduced a similar bill in the Senate.

“The promise of American citizenship should not incentivize illegal migration, but that’s exactly what has happened for far too long,” Britt said. “It’s time to fix this. Senator Lindsey Graham’s and my Birthright Citizenship Act would codify President Trump’s commonsense stance and end the abuse of birthright citizenship that I do not believe is consistent with the original meaning of the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause. This will protect our nation’s sovereignty, disincentivize illegal migration, and ensure America’s citizenship practices are stronger and better aligned with peer countries around the globe.”
