In some places, there are movements to defund and disband police, particularly in major American cities where dissatisfaction in local law enforcement is prevalent.
That is not a mainstream view in Alabama, and U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) sees an opportunity for the state to capitalize.
During an interview with Huntsville radio’s WVNN, Palmer said investments in law enforcement along with other areas could be used as a recruiting incentive to bring businesses to the state from places seeking to downgrade or eliminate their city’s police force and potentially jeopardize public safety.
“It is always less expensive to invest on the front end rather than have to pay for the clean-up on the backend,” he said. “You kind of touched on a point as far as what it means for the public perception. You’ve got businesses that I think will leave Chicago. They’re going to leave New York and even Minneapolis and these other places, where you’ve got these crackpot politicians saying we’re going to disband the police. Well, nobody in their right mind would want to have a business in those precincts.”
“What we ought to be saying here in Alabama is we’re going to invest in our infrastructure,” Palmer continued. “We’re going to invest in our education system. We’re going to invest in our communities, including or law enforcement. And you’re welcome to bring your business to Alabama. This is not only a good place to have a business. It is a good place to raise a family. That doesn’t mean we’re perfect. We’ve got a lot to work on. We have an awful lot to offer.”
