Last month, the Alabama House passed a bill that would ban biological men from playing in women’s college sports. The legislation got some Democratic support and passed with just five votes in opposition and 14 members abstaining.
The bill’s sponsor, State Rep. Susan Dubose (R-Hoover), told Fox Business on Saturday that the issue is all about fairness.
“I sponsored a bill to protect female athletes in college sports because common sense and science will tell you that women deserve to play on a safe and level playing field,” Dubose said. “And competing with men is just not a fair playing field.”
Dubose believes the people of the state will support this law based on similar legislation that previously passed.
“So in Alabama we know what a woman is,” she said, “we are not afraid of the truth, and we have common sense here. We want women at the collegiate level to compete with biological women and, of course, men on men’s teams will compete with biological men. We had already passed this in the K-12 level, we took it on to the college level with this bill.”
Dubose thinks many women have been hurt as a result of biological men being allowed to compete against them in sports.
“We’ve seen athletes getting hurt,” she said. “We’ve seen athletes working decades for a goal and for records. And anytime a woman loses a record, they lose a place on a team, a place on a podium, it’s one too many women that have been hurt.”
She also commended some of her colleagues on the other side of the isle for supporting this bill as well.
“(T)his bill passed with bipartisan support in the House,” she said. “We had a tremendous amount of support from Republicans and Democrats. Democrat fathers went down on the floor and spoke, they want their girls to play with other girls. It just doesn’t make sense otherwise.”
Dubose praised other states that have passed similar laws and called on Republicans across the country to defend women in sports.
“People have to start standing up for the truth,” she said. “People have to start using the common sense God gave them and stand up for what’s right. I think we have about 16 states now that have passed this law at the collegiate level, and if we have to do it one by one until every single state passed this law then so be it.
“It’s the right thing to do.”
