Rep. Byrne: Democrat overreach during George Floyd unrest could favor GOP in November elections

The political energy certainly has shifted to the left side of the political spectrum in America over the last week and a half as civil unrest has erupted throughout the country.

With that momentum shift, Democrats have attempted to capitalize with policy proposals, including calls to defund the police, eradicate certain memorials from public spaces, and to diminish the presidency of Donald Trump.

However, U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Fairhope) says it could come at a cost for Democrats at the ballot box. During an interview with Huntsville’s WVNN on Tuesday, Byrne said that although it has been a “bumpy year,” voters could be reluctant to support a Democratic Party that is seemingly overreaching.

“I think at the ballot box is where you’re going to see the response,” Byrne said. “I think people are going to say, ‘I’m fed up with this stuff. I’ve had enough of it.’ I never have a question about that in Alabama. You know, the question we have is in places like Michigan, places like Florida, places like North Carolina, Arizona, Colorado, those other midwestern states. They’re going to determine the outcome to this election.”

“We’ve got to get people in those places in a little bit happier mood about the president, about the way they see the country going. But as I say, if the economy keeps roaring back to life and the Democrats overreach, as they are going to overreach, I just think the American people including those swing voters in those swing states are going to say, ‘Look, we got the country going in the right direction. We had a bumpy year. But I don’t want to go where the Democrats want to take us, so I’m going to go in there and vote for President Trump and my Republican U.S. Senate candidate and my Republican U.S. House candidate,'” he added.
