Rep. Brooks calls on mayors, governors, president to authorize law enforcement use of lethal, non-lethal force to end ‘thuggery,’ ‘criminal element’ among George Floyd protests

Alabama has not been an exception to the nationwide civil unrest stemming from the death of George Floyd, a man who died while in the custody of Minneapolis police.

Birmingham was hit hard on Sunday night, which included the destruction of private property and attacks on members of the media by so-called protesters.

According to U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Huntsville), political leaders at the executive level needed to be more proactive in stopping the lawless elements of the protest movement.

Brooks called Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, a former congressional colleague, best suited to prosecute law enforcement accused of wrongdoing in Floyd’s death, given his identity and beliefs. However, Brooks said that prosecution would take time, and in the interim, measures had to be taken to combat violence.

“The idea that you go out immediately and start looting stores and burning businesses and killing other people — that’s what has to be stamped out,” he said Monday on WVNN’s “The Jeff Poor Show.” “Our mayors, our governors and our president, to whatever extent is necessary — they have to declare martial law, or they have to declare a state of emergency, and they have to authorize our law enforcement to use any and all force, lethal or non-lethal, reasonably necessary and permitted by law in order to stop the thuggery and the criminal element from infiltrating these legitimate protests causing the kind of property damage and loss of life that they have caused.”
