In May, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service under President Joe Biden announced that it would expand the definition of discrimination under Title IX to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise) joined some of his Republican House colleagues in expressing concern that this new rule would be used to force public schools to push new transgender policies.
Monday, Moore and 13 other Republican members of the House sent a letter to Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack asking him to “rescind” the new directive.
“Schools around the country should be able to support the needs of their students, without the federal government forcing radical ideology on them,” the letter says. “Your department’s recently announced policy to expand the definition of “sex discrimination” found in the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to hold American schools hostage to the Left’s woke agenda.”
The members of Congress argued this could directly affect the many children in America who were dependent on the federal school lunch program.
“Millions of students receive benefits from your department every day,” the letter continues. “The National School Lunch Program provides over a billion lunches to students during a given year. Any ‘changes’ to the discrimination allegations procedures would only harm students and force upon them the Biden administration’s transgender agenda. This is unacceptable and goes far beyond the authority of your department. You must rescind this policy change.”
Other members who signed on to the letter include U.S. Reps. Mary Miller (R-Ill.), Clay Higgins (R-La.), Warren Davidson (R-Ohio), Glenn Grothman (R-Wisc.), Lauren Boebert (R-Co.), Mark Green (R-Tenn.), Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), Dianna Harshbarger (R-Tenn.), Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Dan Bishop (R-N.C.), Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), Bob Good (R-Va.) and Andy Biggs (R-AZ).
