The Alabama Republican Party is celebrating the fact that every candidate supported under the Party’s new municipal program won their race in this week’s runoff elections.
Included in the victories was the Mobile mayoral race, where long-time Democrat State Representative Barbara Drummond—endorsed by Vice President Kamala Harris and Senator Raphael Warnock—was defeated by former Republican District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis.
“The Alabama Republican Party was proud to stand behind our conservative candidates in these municipal runoffs, ALGOP Chair John Wahl said.
“Voters deserved to know the facts about every candidate and where they stood on the issues. We are not shy about fighting for good policy and strong conservative principles—whether it’s in Washington, Montgomery, or at City Hall. When there’s a race with a clear Republican and a clear Democrat, the Alabama GOP will always stand with our Republican candidate.”
The Party launched a comprehensive municipal program for the runoff election that provided candidates with targeted resources, including direct mail, grassroots mobilization, voter contact by text message, and digital advertising.
The program marks a deliberate expansion of the Party’s efforts into municipal races, an area where Democrats have increasingly attempted to gain ground by running candidates under the banner of nonpartisan elections.
“Historically, the Party has not been as engaged in municipal elections, but that changed this election cycle, Wahl continued.
“I believe the Party must defend and support our conservative candidates at every level of government.
Republicans also had a big victories in Guntersville and Hoover. In Guntersville, Republican mayoral candidate Leigh Dollar secured a 58%-42% victory after the August 26 general election ended in a tie with former Democrat State Rep. and Hillary Clinton donor Jeff McLaughlin.
In Hoover, both Republican City Council candidates advanced from the general election to runoffs and won decisively Tuesday, each significantly increasing their vote shares.
“For too long, Democrats have tried to sneak their agenda into city governments under the cover of nonpartisan elections,” Wahl argued. “They support their candidates and then complain when the Republican Party does the same. I am proud to send a clear message in this election: we will stand shoulder to shoulder with our conservative candidates, and we will not sit on the sidelines while Democrats try to take over our communities.”
