U.S. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL) on Tuesday morning interviewed with Washington, D.C. radio station WAMU’s “1A Across America.”
The interview followed Jones’ virtual address to the 2020 Democratic National Convention on Monday night.
The convention, which concluded on Thursday, featured presidential nominee Joe Biden and vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris, along with prominent Democrats of old such as former President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton and 2016 presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
Additionally, former rivals of Biden’s for the 2020 nomination were featured, including U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), as well as some of the more outspoken far-left members of the party (U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York) and a handful of little-known, Republican ex-officials (headlined by former Ohio Governor John Kasich).
Indeed, the stated theme of the first night of the convention, the one during which Jones spoke, was unity — as the party attempted to portray that people on a wide spectrum of political views were banded together to defeat President Donald Trump in November.
Jones was asked about the authenticity of this during the WAMU radio interview.
The host asked, “Is this real unity or a carefully choreographed presentation of unity?”
“Well, I think it’s a little of both,” Jones responded. “I think you have to carefully choreograph something in order to get your message across in the world that we’re living in today.”
Alabama’s junior senator continued to say that “we are a divided country … and we’ve got to have those voices of unity.”
“It was an amazing display,” Jones added of Monday night’s convention programming, “all the way from Bernie Sanders on one end to John Kasich on the other that is the message of the Democratic Party — we’re ready for change.”
