Public Natural Gas Week: A celebration of consumer choice and community growth

October 6-12 is Public Natural Gas Week, a time to reflect on the importance of public natural gas systems across our country and the vital role they play in communities both nationwide and here at home.

This commemorative week also coincides with the peak of the 2024 election season, so it’s also a good time to remember that decisions made in November will shape America’s future energy landscape.

At Southeast Gas, our mission is simple: provide a reliable supply of affordable natural gas to the communities we have the honor to serve, and in so doing, help Alabamians live better lives and foster economic growth.

Our dedication to our communities means protecting the right of consumers to choose their energy sources. Whether that be for heating their homes, cooking meals or running businesses, consumers should have the freedom to select the energy that best suits their needs.

This freedom was recently reinforced by the enactment of Alabama’s Energy Choice Law. Thanks to this law, no one can restrict your ability to choose appliances based solely on their energy source.

It’s a victory for consumer rights championed by Senator Gerald Allen and other Alabama legislators who understand the importance of protecting our freedoms.

Alabama’s legislative efforts to protect consumer choice are part of a broader national movement that is crucial for maintaining robust, competitive energy markets.

For example, Senator Katie Britt recently co-sponsored the Natural Gas Tax Repeal Act, aimed at eliminating fees on methane emissions imposed by the Clean Air Act. This tax raises costs for energy customers and unfairly burdens families already struggling with higher inflation. Sen. Britt’s advocacy for repealing this tax represents an “all-of-the-above” approach to affordable American energy, which includes natural gas as a key component, and reflects a strong national strategy for energy independence and economic growth.

The combination of consumer choice, local control, competitive prices and personalized customer service offered by public natural gas utilities creates a powerful environment for homeowners and industries alike.

This dynamic is not just beneficial for Alabama but serves as a model for communities across America.

As we celebrate Public Natural Gas Week, let’s take a moment to recognize how vital public natural gas systems are – not just for keeping your home warm and the lights on, but for helping communities grow and ensuring you always have the power of consumer choice.

Greg Henderson is the CEO of Southeast Gas. Established in 1952 with a primary mission to help communities experience industrial growth, Southeast Gas is committed to reliably and efficiently supplying natural gas to customers throughout Southeast Alabama.
