Despite inflationary headwinds in various sectors of the economy, Alabama utility rates have remained steady.
Public Service Commission President Twinkle Cavanaugh warns the Biden White House’s focus on climate change is a threat to those rates and other energy sources for consumers.
During an appearance on Mobile radio FM Talk 106.5 on Thursday, Cavanaugh pointed to the creation of an agency within the Biden administration that evaluates every policy by its potential impact on climate change.
Such a focus, she said, ignores the plight of consumers, who are facing higher prices.
“[T]he part that really hits home here at the Public Service Commission are the energy issues that are coming out of Washington,” she said. “I don’t know if your listeners remember. I know I talked about this earlier on the show a couple of months ago. But the White House immediately created the White House Interagency Council on Environmental Justice.”
Cavanaugh explained the focus of that so-called council was climate change, which the Biden administration considers to be the biggest security threat facing the nation.
She said, “He created this interagency council in the White House so that every decision that is made out of Washington, whether or not it is on a regulatory basis or on a legislative basis, would have to go through this council and they would have to decide how would it affect our climate.”
“Now, with all the things going on — families in Alabama hurting, as we talked about with higher inflation, and all the costs being put on us as far as our energy — and yet, they want to tack on more by talking about taking everything through this council in the White House. It’s ridiculous,” Cavanaugh added.
According to Cavanaugh, the Trump-era tax cuts offered some Alabamians decreased utility rates. However, increases in raw energy costs, in part due to inflation, remain a threat.
