President Trump announces executive order to make ‘The Gulf of America’ a reality

During President Donald Trump’s inaugural address Monday, the president said one of his first executive orders will be officially changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

The executive order directs the secretary of the interior to change the name to “Gulf of America” for use on official maps and throughout the federal government.

“A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump said.

While Trump’s comment received a standing ovation from most of the people present at the Capitol, Hillary Clinton visibly scoffed at the comment.

Trump first discussed the idea earlier this month at a press conference in Mar-a-Lago.

“We’re going to change because we do most of the work there and it’s ours,” Trump said. “It’s appropriate, and Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country,” Trump said in a wide-ranging news conference.

The president also received  support for the plan from U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), who cosponsored the Gulf of America Act, which would require all federal agencies to update their documents and maps to reflect the new name within 180 days of enactment. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names, under the Department of the Interior, would oversee the implementation.

“President Trump is right—the Gulf of America is a beautiful name, and I’m proud to represent the Alabama Gulf Coast in Congress and support this overdue change,” Moore said in a statement. “The Gulf of America is home to the great Port of Mobile, one of the most important ports in our nation, that drives our economy and connects America to the rest of the world. Mexico has allowed millions of illegal immigrants and deadly drugs to flood across our borders, showing no respect for our sovereignty. It’s time we reclaim our Gulf, secure our borders, and put America first!”
