Republicans in the Alabama House of Representatives on Thursday continued guiding tax hike bills through the legislative process.
The following tax increase proposals were approved by a vote of the full House:
— Increase cigarette tax to 67.5 cents per pack ($66 million)
— Increase car title tax from $15 to $28 ($19 million)
— Increase tax on car rentals from 1.5 percent to 2 percent ($6 million)
— Increase taxes on nursing homes by $400 per bed ($8 million for Medicaid)
— Increase taxes on pharmacies by adding a new 15-cent tax per prescription ($8 million for Medicaid)
A bill sponsored by Rep. Mike Hill (R-Columbiana) to double the maximum Business Privilege Tax and raise $22 million in revenue was delayed so House leaders could rally more support for the measure.
Another bill, sponsored by Rep. Mac McCutcheon (R-Huntsville), would increase the gasoline excise tax by $0.05 per gallon in 2015 and “index” the tax so that it would rise and fall inversely with the price of gas. If the price of gasoline increases quicker than its 10 year average, the tax would go down. If the price of gasoline decreases, the tax would go up. The revenue generated by the tax would go toward funding road projects. The bill has not yet come to the floor for a vote of the full House, but was passed out of committee.
With only a few exceptions, Democrats opposed the tax increase measures, leaving Republicans to pass the bills without their support.
