Edgar’s Bakery is moving ahead with a major expansion in Pelham, investing $13.1 million in a new production and distribution center that will support the company’s growing reach across Alabama and beyond.
According to The Business Journals, the project will bring a 30,000-square-foot facility to the corner of U.S. 31 and Alabama 119, and is expected to create about 40 jobs upon completion in December 2027.
The new center will handle baking operations for Edgar’s storefronts throughout Alabama and production for items distributed nationwide. The project represents an updated version of a smaller proposal previously presented to Pelham officials.
The investment follows the bakery’s continued growth in the region. Edgar’s newest Pelham storefront opened in October, right by the Pelham Public Library.
To support the development, the Pelham City Council recently voted to abate state and local non-education property taxes, along with certain construction-related taxes. Incentives like these are commonly used to encourage business expansion and new job creation.
Founded in 1998 by Terry and Dottie Smith, Edgar’s Bakery has built a widespread presence that now includes locations in Greystone, the Birmingham Financial Center, Tuscaloosa’s Galleria, Trussville, Hoover, Homewood, Madison and two storefronts in Huntsville, among others.
The bakery’s name honors Terry’s father, Kelley Edgar Smith, whose 35 years of work on the linotype floor of The Birmingham News helped inspire the business’ launch.
Edgar’s is known for its wide selection of cakes and baked goods, while also offering soups, salads, sandwiches, specialty beverages and breakfast items that have broadened its appeal across the state.
The upcoming Pelham facility is expected to strengthen the company’s production capacity and help meet demand as Edgar’s continues to expand its footprint in Alabama.
