In his bid to become the state’s next lieutenant governor,  Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, Rick Pate, recently picked up a significant endorsement from a state trade association representing the grocery retail industry. The organization, the Alabama Grocers Association, has more than 135 retail members operating more than 850 stores.

“Commissioner Pate understands the role of the grocery industry and its importance to the economic development of the state of Alabama,” said Ellie Taylor, President of the Alabama Grocers Association.

“State laws and regulations have a direct impact on our member companies, and I am confident he will continue to work with the grocery industry as a partner to strengthen businesses in Alabama.”

Pate expressed his gratitude for the support and noted his strong relationship with the group.

“I am honored to receive the support of the Alabama Grocers Association,” he said. “They have worked with me from the beginning to promote local food and businesses in our great state. Together, we’ve advocated for food safety while eliminating unnecessary barriers and regulations that hinder small business profitability. I look forward to continuing our partnership.”

According to the AGA, the grocery industry is a major driver of Alabama’s economy, providing more than 188,000 jobs, paying over $6.8 billion in annual wages, and contributing over $1.5 billion in state taxes. The industry’s total economic impact exceeds $18 billion annually.

In the Republican primary for the position, Pate is expected to face off against incumbent Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, Nicole Wadsworth, and potentially, Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl.

The primary election for lieutenant governor will be held on May 19, 2026.
