Vice President J.D. Vance and several of Alabama’s top officials are sending their condolences to those grieving the loss of the young college student from Alabama who was tragically killed in a mass shooting at Brown University over the weekend.
Ella Cook has been identified as one of the victims killed in the attack. She was a 19-year-old sophomore who was a longtime member at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham.
Cook was also the Vice President of the Brown University chapter of the College Republicans of America.
Vance said he was a “beautiful young girl” who has a lot of “courage” for standing up for conservatism at a liberal college.
“This beautiful young girl was one of the murdered students at Brown University. It takes special courage to lead an organization of conservatives on a left wing campus, and I am very sorry our country has lost one of its bright young stars,” Vance said. “Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord.”
U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) said his prayers are with Cook’s family.
“I am heartbroken to hear that Mountain Brook’s Ella Cook was among those killed over the weekend at Brown University,” Tuberville said. “Our hearts and our prayers are with the Cook family and everyone impacted by this senseless killing.”
U.S. Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Hoover) said he was “heartbroken” over the tragedy.
“Ann and I are heartbroken to hear about the passing of Ella Cook. By all accounts, she was a special young woman,” Palmer said. “Please join us in praying for Ella’s family and all those impacted by the shooting at Brown University.”
In Alabama, Cook is being remembered by friends and former co-workers, including those she worked with at Mountain Brook Creamery.
According to officials at Brown, the shooting took place Saturday afternoon at the Barus & Holley engineering and physics building while exams were taking place. Two people were killed and nine others were injured.
Brown President Christina Paxson said the suspect “is still at large,” and to contact the Providence Police Department tip line at 401-652-5767.
