Moody High School football program fined, placed on probation after viral cigar celebration

The Moody High School football program has received some severe punishment for “flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct” in the wake of its Class 5A state championship victory over Vigor on December 4 in Birmingham.

Members of the team — who are of course minors — were seen in viral social media photos smoking cigars in the locker room after the game.

According to a story from Ben Thomas of AL(dot)com, the official social media account for the football program posted a now deleted picture of players using cigars with a caption reading, “Sorry about the locker room celebration — Send bill to City of Moody.”

As a result of the situation, four assistant coaches and 10 players will now be suspended from participating in the 2026 spring or fall jamboree game and the first regular-season game of the 2026 season.

Players or coaches who transfer from Moody will have to serve the suspension at their new school, while players who were seniors and will not be eligible were handed an additional fine of $250 according to the AHSAA.

Any damages to the Protective Stadium dressing room are also going to be paid by Moody High.

“Winning a state championship is a historic achievement for the Moody community,” said St. Clair superintendent Rusty St. John. “However, certain actions by a small number of our student-athletes and staff members have unfortunately dampened the celebration. We do not condone the improper conduct of those involved, and we apologize to the AHSAA and Progressive (Protective) Stadium for their actions.”
