An Alabama high school senior is using his talent on the football field to make a difference for families facing one of life’s toughest challenges.
Rob Ashworth, a senior at The Montgomery Academy, serves as the kicker for the school’s football team. Inspired by his grandmother’s battle with dementia, Rob decided to turn each extra point, field goal, and touchback into an opportunity to support those living with memory loss and their families.
Earlier this year, Rob launched Kicking for a Cause, a fundraiser benefiting Respite for All, a dementia care ministry that began in Montgomery and has since expanded nationwide. The organization provides restorative care, support services, and community for individuals and families navigating dementia.
Through the campaign’s website, donors can pledge a one-time gift or give based on Rob’s in-game performance each Friday night. Contributions are set at different support levels — Gold, Silver, and Bronze — tied to the type of kick. At the Gold level, for example, donors contribute $5 per extra point, $15 per touchback, and up to $30 for longer field goals. All funds go directly to Respite for All.
Rob’s fundraising efforts have already surpassed $5,000 with support from dozens of contributors this season. So far, he has made more than 27 extra points and at least three field goals. The Montgomery Academy Eagles are currently 7-1 this season, building momentum as they head toward the playoffs.
Founded in 2012 at First United Methodist Church of Montgomery, Respite for All began as a two-day-a-week program to support individuals living with dementia and their care partners. What started with 14 volunteers and two participants has grown into a national model for dementia care, emphasizing meaningful engagement through art, music, exercise, shared meals, and worship.
Rob is also involved in campus life beyond the football field. He serves as Student Government Association president, is a member of Montgomery Academy’s state championship soccer team, attended Alabama Boys State this year, and earned the Global Seal of Biliteracy in 2025.
