The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce was announced as a winner of the Mac Conway Award for Excellence in Economic Development on Tuesday.
The award is given out by Site Selection magazine, a publication focused on economic development in the United States.
The award winners are based on “total projects, total investment associated with those projects and jobs associated with those projects,” according to the organization’s website.
The top 20 economic development groups by those metrics are listed alphabetically as the winners.
Mac Conway, the namesake of the award, was a pioneering economic developer who went on to found Site Selection Magazine and its parent company, Conway, Inc.
“This is a well-deserved honor for Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, which has made many significant contributions to the region,” said Alabama Secretary of Commerce Greg Canfield.
Site Selection highlighted “Conner Industries (wood products), Dow Chemical (chemicals), Glovis Alabama (logistics), Hyundai Motor Manufacturing (automotive), Lightsource BP (energy), Gerhardi Kunststofftechnik GmbH (automotive), Honda Manufacturing of Alabama (automotive)” as significant projects brought to fruition in part by the local chamber.
“We are proud to be honored by this publication that looked at organizations like ours across the country and recognized our success,” commented Montgomery Chamber Chairman Arthur Ducote.
Data provided by the Chamber says the area received $1,013,569,764 in industrial capital investments during the year 2019, second all-time behind 2002, which saw the initial Hyundai plant announcement.
“The City of Montgomery is pleased to celebrate the Montgomery Area Chamber for this much deserved award,” added Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed.
