Mobile breaking ground on $237 million arena to revitalize downtown entertainment

A major milestone for downtown Mobile is set for Wednesday, as city leaders and development partners gather to break ground on the new Mobile Arena, a $237 million entertainment venue poised to transform the Gulf Coast’s live event landscape.

Located at 401 Civic Center Drive, the state-of-the-art facility will rise on the site of the former Mobile Civic Center, replacing the 60-year-old complex with a modern 10,000-seat arena designed to host concerts, sporting events, and a variety of community gatherings.

The Mobile Arena was made possible through a joint effort between the City of Mobile and Oak View Group, which will manage operations at the venue through a partnership with Live Nation. The new 298,000 square-foot facility will serve as a flagship attraction on a 22-acre site that city officials say could see up to $1 billion in investment over time.

Local officials, including Mayor Sandy Stimpson and Councilman William Carroll, will join Oak View Group leaders Peter Luukko and Greg O’Dell at the groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction.

Once completed, the Mobile Arena is expected to draw top-tier entertainment acts while also serving as a venue for local traditions such as Mardi Gras balls. City leaders see the project as a key step in the continued revitalization of downtown Mobile and a major driver of tourism and economic development along the Gulf Coast.
