Following a deadly terrorist attack in New Orleans earlier this month, the Mobile City Council may soon grant the purchase of eighteen portable bollards to protect crowds ahead of the city’s beloved carnival season. Additionally, the council has been asked to consider the purchase of a truck and tools to be specifically used for installing and removing barriers throughout the city. The short posts, used to create a protective barrier, are expected to cost the city approximately $167, 371.20.

Executive Director of Public Safety, Rob Lasky, explained to WKRG News 5 why the bollards and a truck dedicated to barrier management are necessary.

“In response to the tragic events that unfolded in New Orleans on January 1, 2025, our Public Safety Department and the Mobile Police Department began finding ways to enhance pedestrian safety at large events, with a particular focus on the upcoming Mardi Gras celebrations in downtown Mobile,” Lasky said.

“After evaluating several options, we are requesting that the Mobile City Council approve the purchase of 18 TB100 portable bollards, which will provide enhanced crowd control and protection against potential threats. In addition to the bollards, the city will also acquire a dedicated truck for transporting the barriers, along with the necessary tools for their installation, removal, and relocation as needed.”

“During the 2025 Carnival Season, we also plan to utilize portable barricades and security assets from other communities that Mobile has partnered with in the past. These are just a few of the many steps that Mayor Stimpson and our public safety leaders are taking to protect Mobilians and visitors during the upcoming Mardi Gras season and beyond.”

The vote on the purchase of the bollards and truck is expected to take place as early as next week.  Should the council approve the emergency purchase, the city’s administration will immediately sign a contract and have them placed in Mobile.

The TB100 bollard is a product of Delta Scientific Corps and is a military-grade portable barrier.
